Earlier this year we had a sustained period of rain that caused widespread flooding all over the Sydney Basin. Since then things have dried up but on Friday an intense low pressure system moved in and deluged us again. Since Friday we have had nearly 400mm of rain here in Horsley and it’s showing no sign of stopping at this stage.
The photo above and the two below are from Robins Creek which runs by the end of my street, about three houses from my place.
In all the time that I have lived here I have not seen the water as high as it is at the moment and, given that there is an East Coast Low predicted today with heavy rains, the chances are that the creek will rise even further as the rain, plus the high tide today, will prevent the creeks from emptying into Lake Illawarra.
Having said that, we are still vastly better off than some, friends of mine who live around Camden have been flooded out of their houses for the third time this year, I feel so sorry for them.
Since Friday we have been effectively isolated here with there being only one road open to allow us to get in and out of Horsley. We did manage to get some shopping done so we are OK for provisions but we’re not going anywhere and not for a while, it seems.
Facebook has been providing me with some great entertainment at the moment with some great memories from years ago. In July 2017 I took Rhonnda on her first tour since I bought her in February of that year. All the way up to Queensland and home again with lots of enjoyable side-trips.
One of these was to Gatton, on the plains west of Brisbane where a well-known motorcycling identity has decided to spend his retirement. As well as still being a keen motorcyclists, Martin has built himself a hotrod and a couple of aeroplanes, yes, really. This photo, which I happen to think is a really cool shot, was taken in his garage/hangar and is a really “moody” one.
I spent the night there, watched a MotoGP telecast and, the following morning, Martin wheeled out the plane and took me for a quick flight over the local area.
Obviously there’s no riding taking place at the moment and, given that the local councils have hardly even started on repairing the damaged roads since the last deluge, I am guessing that the roads will be even worse now.
Oh, well, it’s a good thing that Helena and I enjoy each other’s company so much.
Ride safe and I’ll catch you next time.
