Mention the name Dan Gurney and those of us who are old enough to remember will instantly think of Porsche F1 cars, the black helmet in the Brabham cockpit and Le Mans’s of years gone by. The lanky American was universally loved by fans and the media on both sides of the Atlantic and helped continue the American influence in F1 that had started with Phil Hill some years before.

Since retiring from active competition, Gurney has turned his attention to motorcycles, becoming the designer and builder of a most unusual cycle, the Alligator. You can read about it here. Gurney has copped plenty of flak for the design, but not for its execution, which as always been first class. I’m not sure that it’s my cup of tea, but you can’t fault the old man for his enthusiasm and committment.
